It feels like decades since we had a disaster movie of a truly global scale (unless you count Independence Day: Resurgence *gags*).

But that’s about to change in a week's time.

If you’re jonesing for a heavy dose of killer waves, lightning storms and other epic catastrophes, Geostorm might just be the ultimate cinematic wish fulfilment.

The film is set in the near future where an intricate network of satellites is capable of controlling the world’s climate. When it malfunctions and begins releasing a series of unnatural disasters, it’s left to a team of astronauts to shut it down before the Earth is completely destroyed.

All right, what gives? Movies like these are a dime a dozen, so what makes Geostorm such a special little snowflake?

It’s Real!

Well, in the future perhaps.

Unlike 2012 or The Day After Tomorrow, the whole concept of Geostorm is rooted in an avant-garde science known as geoengineering. Also known as climate intervention, it’s the deliberate intervention in the Earth’s climatic system with the aim of affecting global warming.

With the latest test involving the sending of aerosol injections into the stratosphere to simulate atmospheric cooling, scientists hope the technology can act as a last ditch bid to halt climate change.

Of course, there are some concerns that these ideas could backfire in horrible ways.
