All the trials and tribulations of Aparajito Ray`s journey to directing his debut feature-length film, Pather Panchali, are followed. He begins as an amateur filmmaker, but after travelling to London for his day job as a book cover illustrator, he is exposed to films from all over the globe and brings back inspiration for his own works. One film in particular, The Bicycle Rider by Vittorio Rossi, inspired him the most. Despite the odds being stacked against him, he overcomes them all to great critical and audience reception. He slowly develops from a mere amateur to a veteran of the silver screen, eventually forming the first Film Society in Calcutta with his fellow cinephiles.
