Set in 19th century Japan during its period of modernisation and westernisation, the story follows a former hunter-gatherer who becomes a farmer, cultivating land with his ox. As he transitions into this new way of life, he loses his spiritual connection to nature, even as he seeks to reconnect with it through his agricultural work.
