Days Of Being Wild

PG / Cantonese / Drama / Romance / 94 min

Synopsis

In 1960, young playboy Yuddy (Leslie Cheung) pursues—and ends—a string of romances, first with a fast food kiosk worker (Maggie Cheung), then with a cabaret dancer (Carina Lau). This intoxicating period piece embodies the director’s classic themes of urban alienation, missed opportunities, identity and unrequited love among lovelorn individuals in Hong Kong.

Heralded by critics as auteur Wong Kar-Wai’s first masterpiece, Days of Being Wild, maybe more significantly, marks the beginning of one of cinema’s most symbiotic relationships: between that of legendary Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle and Wong. Doyle was responsible for developing Wong’s distinctive dreamy visual style, a trademark which continued to mark their subsequent collaborations over a 14-year period—including such films as Chungking Express (1994), Happy Together (1997) and In the Mood for Love (2000). Doyle has lensed over 80 different projects, ranging from narrative films, short films, documentary, and television. In addition to working with Wong, Doyle has collaborated with numerous directors such as Gus Van Sant, Zhang Yimou and Jim Jarmusch. Locally, he was the cinematographer for Tan Bee Thiam and Lei Yuan Bin’s film Fundamentally Happy (2015). In recognition of his iconic cinematography work, Doyle received the prestigious Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography award at the Cannes Film Festival this past May.
