In post-war Tokyo where Noriko lives with her extended family, she leads a happy life as she enjoys her career and her friends. Her more traditional family is worried though because she was nearing her thirties and yet she is still single. She is pressured by her family to accept the marriage proposal of a 40-year-old business associate. She has other plans, however, when her widowed childhood friend returns to the neighbourhood.
