Synopsis

Ikiru (生きる), directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1952, is a deeply moving Japanese film that explores the search for meaning in life. The story follows Kanji Watanabe, a middle-aged bureaucrat who has spent decades in a monotonous, uneventful job. Upon learning he has terminal stomach cancer and only months to live, Watanabe confronts the emptiness of his existence and begins a quest to find purpose.

Initially, he attempts to escape through hedonism and fleeting pleasures but soon discovers these bring no satisfaction. His perspective shifts after encounters with a young, vibrant co-worker and a group of citizens struggling to have a playground built in their community. Watanabe resolves to dedicate his remaining time to championing their cause, cutting through bureaucratic red tape to leave a meaningful legacy.

The film's latter half examines Watanabe’s impact after his death, as colleagues reflect on his determination and selflessness. Ikiru is a poignant meditation on mortality, the value of life, and the enduring significance of small yet purposeful actions.
