Extolled as the first great science-fiction film, the 1927 German expressionist film by Fritz Lang presents a highly stylised futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers - the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a saviour to mediate their differences.
