Forget everything you know about the Merry Men. A24 has just dropped the first trailer for "The Death of Robin Hood," and Hugh Jackman's take on the legendary folk hero is about as far from Errol Flynn as you can get.
Directed by Michael Sarnoski—the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed "Pig" and last year's "A Quiet Place: Day One"—this dark reimagining strips away the romanticism of Sherwood Forest to reveal a haunted man wrestling with a violent past. Jackman stars as a battle-worn Robin Hood, gravely injured and struggling with the weight of a life spent stealing and killing, even if it was in the name of justice.
The film sees the iconic outlaw seeking redemption through a mysterious woman (Jodie Comer) who offers him an unexpected chance at salvation, while Bill Skarsgård rounds out the cast in an undisclosed role.
What makes this version particularly distinctive is Sarnoski's decision to shoot on 35mm film for the first time in his career. The director explained the creative choice:
"There's a charge that it gives you—we're burning film right now, this is the real deal. There's something about being in real epic, scopey locations, shooting on film that feels like you're capturing something."
The choice appears deliberate: capturing sweeping landscapes and intimate character moments with a tactile quality that matches the film's grounded approach.
Production wrapped in April 2025, and early buzz suggests A24 may have another awards contender on their hands. After this, Sarnoski is set to tackle another adaptation—Hideo Kojima's enigmatic video game "Death Stranding."
"The Death of Robin Hood" promises to deconstruct a legend we thought we knew, asking whether a life of righteous theft can ever truly be redeemed. Based on this first look, Jackman and Sarnoski aren't interested in easy answers.
