LOTR's Original Elrond Actor Candidly Addresses Potential Franchise Return For New Movies

Hugo Weaving offers a candid response to whether he would reprise the role of Elrond in future movies of the Lord of the Rings franchise. Weaving portrayed the Elven character in Peter Jackson's three-movie adaptation of J R.R Tolkien's influential fantasy series, later reprising the role when the director brought the events of The Hobbit to the big screen. Elrond was the Master of Rivendell, and a heroic Elven leader during Sauron's fall in the Second Age, the quest to the Misty Mountains, and the return of the Dark Lord in the Third Age.

While The Lord of the Rings franchise will kick off its big screen return in fall 2024, Weaving has ruled out any involvement in the franchise. Speaking to GamesRadar+, the original Elrond star stated that he feels he spent enough time in Middle-Earth after many collaborations with Jackson in the franchise and on other projects.

Personally, I’ve had enough of that. It was great being in New Zealand on and off over a ten year period. I did then go back and work with the same team [director Peter Jackson and writer Fran Walsh] on a project called Mortal Engines which was going to be their next big franchise, but it died on its arse. So, I’ve had enough of Middle-earth, I don’t imagine anyone would ask me to do it again.

Furthermore, Weaving stated that he no longer feels he is at the right age to reprise the role of an ageless figure. Admitting that he was hesitant to reprise his role for The Hobbit, he stated that while he holds many fond memories, he feels it is best to put it behind him.

"Elrond is meant to be immortal and I’m aging. Elrond is one of the few characters, I think there’s only three or four of them, who spans through The Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. But even when we went back to reshoot certain parts of Lord of the Rings, I was aware I was older than I was before. And shooting stuff on The Hobbit was starting to get slightly silly. I loved being a part of that franchise but I have absolutely no plans or desires to be a part of it anymore."

Furthermore, while Weaving has more than proven himself to be a captivating narrator, another star of Middle-Earth will take on those duties for the animated The War of the Rohirrim movie. With her character's Rohan heritage, Miranda Otto will reprise her role of Rowan to tell the tale of the old riders of Rohan.

This isn't the first time Weaving has placed distance between himself and the future of the Lord of the Rings franchise. Alongside ruling out a potential reprisal in Prime Video's Rings of Power series, he also stated he was uninterested in viewing the series after his extensive involvement. Despite his firm comments, it is clear he has no ill will towards the franchise, as he wished Rings of Power actor Robert Aramayo well in portraying the younger Elrond. For Weaving himself, it is clear that he has followed his character's eventual fate and put Middle-Earth behind him.
