Synopsis

Veteran film editor Mary Stephen has long questioned her surname. With an unmistakably Asian face and no mixed heritage, how did she come to bear the surname “Stephen”? Through her father’s old photographs, letters, and contemporary footage, she traces two parallel “Stephen” families unfolding across Hong Kong and mainland China between the 1930s and 1960s. Set against colonial rule, war, and revolution, the documentary quietly explores identity, empire, and memory.
