Starr Carter lives in a poor neighbourhood populated by mostly black residents but studies at a prep school attended by mostly white kids. There is an uneasy balance between these two worlds as she constantly switches from one to another. One day, she witnesses her childhood best friend being fatally shot by a police officer. Starr faces pressure from all sides of the community and must find her voice to stand up for what`s right.
