Set in 19th-century rural Vietnam, a 14-year-old girl named May gets married to a wealthy landowner, Hung; becoming his third wife. She learns that if she wants to gain status in the household, she has to give birth to a male child. Even though she quickly becomes pregnant, she soon learns that she will have to make a choice between living this life and being free.
