The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held on Sunday, January 11, delivered a clear frontrunner and a genuine surprise as awards season gathered momentum. Paul Thomas Anderson emerged as the night’s dominant force, while Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet upset expectations in the drama race.

Anderson’s One Battle After Another led the ceremony with four major wins, securing Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category alongside trophies for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Teyana Taylor added to the film’s haul with a Best Supporting Actress win, continuing a strong critical run for both performer and filmmaker.

On the drama side, Hamnet claimed Best Motion Picture, edging out several heavily discussed contenders. Jessie Buckley was also recognized for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare, taking home Best Actress in a Drama for her restrained and emotionally grounded portrayal.
Acting categories reflected a mix of established names and newer awards-season players. Wagner Moura won Best Actor in a Drama for The Secret Agent, while Timothée Chalamet took Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Marty Supreme. Rose Byrne rounded out the comedy acting wins with Best Actress for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
With Oscar nominations approaching later this month, both One Battle After Another and Hamnet now move forward as serious contenders, their Golden Globes success cementing their place at the center of the awards conversation.
