An accidental meeting brings three youngsters together inside a mysterious hot springs hotel. What starts off as a hair-raising adventure quickly transforms into a hilarious attempt to save a family.
Like what the plot suggests, Secrets in the Hot Spring delivers both classic laughs and scares. But what it doesn’t reveal, however, are the elements that make it stand out from other movies in its genre.
Firstly, the artistic direction by Lin Kuan-hui, who is surprisingly making her directorial debut, deserves a lot of praise. It feels like she has honed her craft from years of filmmaking experience. We were impressed by how she has managed to create a vibrant environment that is both frightening yet fun.
The movie is also elevated by the performances of its young stars: Zhang Ting-hu, Hong Yan-xiang and Lin He-xuan. Backed by the humourous stylings of veteran Hong Kong comedians Law Kar-ying and Mimi Chu, they share tangible chemistry and it was incredibly amusing to watch them bounce off each other.
Lastly, unlike your typical horror comedy, there’s also a touching story that goes straight to your heart. It was unexpected and we were pleasantly surprised by how it was weaved into the movie.
