The Devil Wears Prada 2 made a strong entrance at the North American box office, opening in first place over the weekend and proving that audiences still have plenty of interest in the fashionable world of Miranda Priestly and Runway magazine.
The long-awaited sequel arrived nearly two decades after the original film became a pop culture favorite. This time, Anne Hathaway returns as Andy Sachs, once again crossing paths with Meryl Streep’s powerful fashion editor Miranda Priestly as the magazine faces a major crisis in a changing media landscape.
According to industry estimates from Exhibitor Relations, the film earned US$77 million in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. The result marks a major launch for a comedy-drama and gives the franchise a strong return to theaters.
Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt are all back for the new installment, bringing familiar faces from the 2006 hit back to the big screen. The sequel also includes new celebrity appearances and additional high-profile cast members, giving the film an expanded star presence.
Directed once again by David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada 2 continues the story of characters who became closely associated with the world of fashion, ambition and workplace power. The original film helped turn Miranda Priestly into one of modern cinema’s most memorable bosses, with Streep earning major awards recognition for the role.
Box office analyst David A Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research described the opening as an impressive result for the genre. He pointed to positive reviews and the film’s themes of image, success and power as reasons the story continues to connect with viewers today.
The sequel’s strong debut also shows that nostalgia-driven releases can still perform well when they bring back beloved characters while updating the story for modern audiences.
Last week’s box office leader, Michael, moved into second place but continued to perform well. The Michael Jackson biopic earned US$54 million in North America for the weekend.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and released by Lionsgate, the film stars Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle. The movie follows Jackson’s journey from child performer to global pop icon. After a huge US$97 million North American opening, the film has now collected more than US$423 million worldwide.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie landed in third place with US$12.1 million. The animated sequel from Universal and Illumination has now pushed its domestic total beyond US$400 million, while its worldwide box office is nearing US$900 million.
Amazon MGM’s sci-fi adventure comedy Project Hail Mary took fourth place with US$8.6 million. The film stars Ryan Gosling as a former teacher turned astronaut who becomes part of a mission to save Earth from a dying sun. Its global earnings have now passed US$625 million.
Rounding out the top five was the Irish horror film Hokum, which earned US$6.4 million. The low-budget release stars Adam Scott as a writer who travels to a strange rural hotel in Ireland, where unsettling events begin to unfold.
The film, directed by Damian McCarthy, has received strong responses from both critics and audiences, helping it stand out among larger studio releases.
With a strong opening weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has shown that the franchise still has major box office appeal. Its mix of returning stars, fashion-world drama and updated themes helped it stand above a busy weekend lineup and claim the top spot in North America.
