Here’s What Singaporean Movie Lovers Thought About 2018 Movies So Far

Ladies and gentlemen… Welcome to our 2018 biannual movie round-up!

Before we head into the second half of the year, we’ve decided to take a look back at the best that cinema had to offer.

Did Avengers: Infinity War live up to the hype? Was there love for Fifty Shades Freed? What about Maze Runner: The Death Cure and Tomb Raider? Everyone asks us, but we’d rather let your fellow movie lovers tell you instead.

We’ve compiled a list of the movies that have graced our silver screens from January to early June and asked all of our Popcorn users in Singapore (over 500 responses!) to chime in with their thoughts.

As a nation, do you think we share the same taste in movies? You might be surprised! Without further ado, here are the results:

Destiny Arrives

Avengers: Infinity War Singapore Roundup

You don’t need a Time Stone to see this one coming! Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War was hailed the outstanding movie by far with 80% of Singaporeans selecting it among their top picks.

With the movie ending on a major cliff-hanger, fans are already eagerly anticipating the release of Avengers 4 to determine the fate of our favourite superheroes. Will it be worth the wait? We can already feel the excitement brewing!

Superhero Fever

Singapore Best Movies 2018

Capes or no capes? Underwear on the inside or outside? No matter which way you lean towards, there’s one thing we can still agree on: We love all superheroes in spite of their fashion choices.

Both Black Panther and Deadpool 2 were rated highly among Singaporeans, coming in at second (66% picked) and third (51% picked) place respectively. Plus, if we count Ready Player One (which featured some really cool superhero Easter eggs), the fourth best picked movie at 35%, this means that the top 4 best movies so far were all superhero movies! Wow!

Loud & Proud

A Quiet Place Singapore Roundup

The biggest surprise went to A Quiet Place, and rightfully so in our books. With 15% of picks, it beat out Avengers: Infinity War and just narrowly lost out to Black Panther for best movie that surpassed expectations.

Seeing it in a cinema was truly an experience unlike any other, and it’s no surprise to learn that Singaporeans are still buzzing about this muted horror-thriller, with many suggesting that they didn’t expect to like it, but ended up loving a lot.

And that’s perhaps why it was not only the top-grossing movie at the Singapore box office for 3 weeks, it was also the first horror movie in history to achieve this feat.

Wonderful! Liang Xi Mei Singapore Roundup

When you need something to appease mom and dad on family night, trust Jack Neo to deliver what they love best.

Reviving his iconic 1980s Comedy Night character Liang Xi Mei for his new local film Wonderful! Liang Xi Mei was clearly an inspired move because of her popularity with the older generation. With 16% of picks, Singaporeans named it the best movie they would recommend to their parents.
